His practice primarily focuses on taxation and regulatory matters, with particular emphasis on Indirect Taxes, including Goods and Services Tax (GST), Customs, Central Excise, VAT, Service Tax, Trade, Foreign Trade Policy, and the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Gopal regularly advises and represents clients on complex tax and regulatory issues, drawing on his in-depth understanding of statutory frameworks and his experience before various judicial and quasi-judicial forums. He appears before the Supreme Court, High Courts, Tax Tribunals, and authorities such as the Authority for Advance Ruling (AAR), the Appellate Authority for Advance Ruling (AAAR), and the National Anti-Profiteering Authority (NAPA). His clients include Indian and multinational companies across sectors such as telecom, metals, software, elevators, cement, insurance, asset management, financial services, power, real estate, automotive, and infrastructure.

Gopal is highly active in contributing to the legal discourse, frequently authoring expert articles for leading newspapers/magazines and providing commentary on landmark judicial developments.

He is a graduate of St. Xavier’s College, Calcutta University. He started his journey as a qualified Chartered Accountant and Company Secretary and subsequently, earned a law degree from Bombay University. Prior to joining ELP, he gained six years of valuable industry experience working with leading manufacturing companies

Gopal has been recognized in various professional rankings, including Litigation Star – Tax by Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific and as Litigation & Disputes Attorney of the Year at the International Tax Review Awards 2024. He is also recognized by ITR World Tax for his work in Tax Controversy. Additionally, he was named in BW 40 Under 40 (2021) and featured as ALB India’s Rising Star in 2022.
