Abhay Chattopadhyay is a Partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice of ELP, Delhi.
Abhay has extensive experience advising clients across a range of industries, including the telecommunication, broadcasting, technology, music & entertainment, sports, and liquor sectors.
Further, Abhay has represented clients on issues pertaining to intellectual property rights, environmental law, competition law, administrative law, education, domestic and international commercial arbitration before various Courts and Tribunals across India. Abhay has appeared in several high–value litigations and represents clients before the Supreme Court, various High Courts, and different tribunals, which have resulted in numerous landmark and reported decisions. This involved leading meetings with general counsels and in-house legal teams, formulating legal strategies, drafting pleadings and motions, appearing and arguing on behalf of clients before different judicial fora and synthesizing complex arguments and evidentiary records for Senior Advocates.
Additionally, Abhay has represented and advised clients on a wide array of issues on policy decisions taken by sectoral regulators such as the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. He has assisted clients in filing representations in respect of the proposed decriminalization of offences under the Copyright Act, advised on compliance with the standards laid down by the Commission on Air Quality Management and made representations on the manner of functioning of sporting bodies in India. Abhay has also represented content owners in respect of compulsory and statutory licenses sought to be obtained by radio broadcasters.
Abhay’s experience allows for clients to be provided with advice that is both – imaginative in approach as well as tempered with practical considerations.
Abhay is an alumnus of the Indian Law Society’s Law College, University of Pune, where he earned his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 2010, and in 2013, he earned his Master of Laws (LL.M.) from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, along with the Wharton Business and Law Certificate from The Wharton School.
Abhay has been recognized in Business World’s elite 40 Under 40 Club of Young Law Achievers.
Prior to joining ELP, Abhay had worked with Mr. Amit Sibal, Senior Advocate from 2010 to 2012, and thereafter, had an independent legal practice from 2014 to February 2022.
