The article unpacks the standard’s consumer-centric approach, which restricts the use of the term “diamond” exclusively to natural diamonds and mandates clear labelling of human-made stones as “laboratory-grown” or “laboratory-created,” effectively discouraging the use of “synthetic diamond” in consumer-facing communications. It also examines the narrow exception permitting such terminology in cross-border trade documentation where required under foreign law, and considers how these labelling norms may be enforced under the BIS Act, 2016.
