He said that while the Sanchar Saathi app’s design and stated purpose are narrowly framed, key questions arise from how “law-enforcement” carve-outs under the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act are applied in practice, emphasising the need for clarity on when and how agencies can access IMEI-linked data, how long such data is retained, and what internal checks exist on access—publishing a high-level fact sheet on data flows, retention timelines and approval chains could ease public fears without diluting cybersecurity goals.
