Our Partner, Rahul Charkha shares his insight in News18, “India’s New Foreign Tax Information Rules Effective From july 1: What Taxpayers Should Know.”

He highlights that India’s updated framework is an administrative and enforcement upgrade, rather than a procedural change. The country already exchanged tax information through treaties, Tax Information Exchange Agreements (TIEAs), the Multilateral Convention, FATCA, and the Common Reporting Standard (CRS). These measures are expected to strengthen the evidentiary value of information used in tax assessments, transfer pricing scrutiny, investigations, and offshore account examinations. The framework aligns with emerging global standards such as the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, indicating a shift toward data-driven tax enforcement covering both traditional and digital asset classes.
