In the interim budget, 2024, the withdrawal of petty, non-verified, non-reconciled, or disputed direct tax demands might not reduce the pendency in courts, as it is the threshold set for the government to file appeals, per the existing litigation policy.

Rahul says, “While the government’s intent to clean up old, petty, outstanding tax demands is commendable, this is unlikely to lead to a reduction in tax litigation.”
