Interim Budget 2024: Elements of progressiveness & populism, forward-thinking & optimism

While the nation awaited a populist budget in view of the upcoming general election, no major amendments were introduced in taxation. However, several schemes and initiatives inter-alia waiver of small tax demands, conversion of 40,000 normal rail bogies to Vande Bharat standards, interest free loans for research and innovation were introduced. These initiatives are set to prove beneficial for crores of taxpayers. Against this backdrop, the author evaluates the nature of the budget, whether populous or progressive and the benefits conferred to the taxpayers.
