The new Consumer Protection Bill – What’s in store?

To address the need for regulating consumer interest and the requirement to reconcile the same with the global standards, the Consumer Protection Bill, 2019 (Bill) was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 30, 2019 and in Rajya Sabha on August 6, 2019. Nishant Shah along with Pranav Pagaria (Senior Associate) and Sachin Jain (Associate Manager) in Part-I of their two series article articulate the impact of the proposed Bill. Examining the laws and regulations governing consumer protection, specifically in the US and the UK, the authors highlight the lacuna in the Indian ‘Consumer Protection’ regime. They strongly opine that the dearth of a Regulator posed a hindrance in effective implementation of the old regime.
