Overview

In order to promote and ensure that quality products are offered to customers in India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) as a national standard-setting body was established under the aegis of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. Compulsory BIS certification is mandated by relevant line ministries through the issuance of “Quality Control Orders”.

Economic Laws Practice, as BIS consultants, has been representing and assisting producers globally to advise on steps to be undertaken during the consultation stage as well as to seek licenses for products covered under the BIS. ELP provides support in the realm of conformity assessment activities of all types, including, inter alia, product certification (both domestic and foreign), BIS registration of electronic & IT products, etc. ELP endeavours to ensure quick and seamless grant of BIS licenses for its clients and provides assistance to clients across all stages of certification, including:

  • Representations to BIS technical committees for revision of existing BIS standards
  • Representations on behalf of governments at the WTO Committee on Technical Barriers to Trade
  • Review and filing of relevant documentation for preparation of Application
  • Identification and recommendation of an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR)
  • Assisting in pre-preparation for the inspection of the manufacturing facility
  • Liaising with the BIS appointed Scientist regarding conduct of the inspection and pre-preparation for the same
  • Visiting the Company’s manufacturing facility with the BIS Officials for inspection
  • Assisting in shipment and testing of the parallel sample in India and regular liaison with the BIS officials and laboratory
  • Regular liaison and follow up with the BIS officials and
  • Facilitating execution and notarization of the final license

ELP has in the past, assisted clients across jurisdictions, including China, Korea, Taiwan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, USA and the European Union in BIS related matters and has covered a wide range of products, including Caustic Soda, Methanol, Butyl Acrylate, Toys, etc.
