The last date for filing an income tax return (ITR) for FY 2021-22 (AY 2022-23) is July 31, 2022. In the previous two years, the government extended the ITR filing and other income tax-related deadlines due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and glitches in the newly launched income tax portal. However, with things going back to normal, is there a chance of the ITR filing deadline being extended this year as well?

Against this backdrop, Rahul Charkha, Partner at Economic Laws Practice (ELP) has been quoted by The Economic Times in their article titled ‘Will ITR filing deadline for FY 2021-22 be extended?’ He says, “The income tax department while deciding on the extension should consider the challenges faced by the taxpayers which include technical glitches, irregular functioning of the portal, delayed release of utilities, and rising covid-19 cases.”
