The Orissa High Court has directed the Customs Department to pay 6% interest on delayed customs refunds to Indian mining major Vedanta. In a significant ruling that upheld taxpayers right to avail interest on delayed refunds, the Orissa HC on May 9, 2025 ruled in favor of Vedanta owing to a provisional assessment by custom authorities that took nearly 14 years to finalise.

The case centered on a dispute over the customs duty levied during the import of  goods by Vedanta was provisionally assessed under Section 18of the Customs Act, 1962.
