In 2023, India exported USD 39.1 billion and imported USD 46.7 billion worth of metals, ranking among the world’s top exporters and importers. These figures highlight the strategic importance of metals and steel in India’s trade landscape.

In their latest paper, “𝗔 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮’𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆”, published in Global Trade and Customs Journal our Partner, Sanjay Notani and Associate Partner Naghm Ghei examine the evolution of India’s metals and steel trade policy from import substitution to today’s calibrated, protection-oriented openness, and the role of key authorities such as the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.
